Portland is the most westerly of Victoria's major coastal towns and the only deep-water port between Melbourne and Adelaide.
It was also the first permanent settlement in Victoria, founded in 1834 by the Hentys.
The township, which features many National Trust–classified buildings, overlooks Portland Bay.
